The Weld County 4-H Speech Arts Contest was held on April 6th, at the Extension Office in Greeley. The 2013 contest saw significant growth, with 12 members preparing 21 presentations. Participants competed in Impromptu, Prepared, Illustrated Speech & Demonstrations. The Senior winners of the Impromptu & Prepared Speeches will be continuing on to represent Weld County at the State 4-H Conference in Ft. Collins Colorado in June. At the Colorado State Fair, coming up in August in Pueblo, the top 3 award winners in all age divisions will be eligible to compete in the Demonstration and Illustrated Talks categories. Topics at this year’s Speech Arts Contest were very diverse, ranging from “All Stitched up” to “Famous 4-Hers”. The overall winners this year were: Seniors-Annie Pantier, Intermediate-Camy Seelhoff, and Junior Lily Helzer.

Sharon Inloes & UNC Elementary Education students Jessica Stikkers & Renee Chaves volunteered as judges for the 2013 contest . The 4-H Speech Arts contest is a great way for 4-H members to become comfortable with speaking in front of groups, which is an essential lifelong skill . 4-H is committed to helping youth reach their full potential as leaders and community members. Projects vary from the traditional Agriculture related projects to the new Tech Wizards and Robotics projects that have become popular in Weld County over the last few years. Community members and 4-H members alike should also mark June 22nd on their calendars as that date will highlight our performing arts and cake project members; as well as offer open competition for community members interested in cake decorating, more information can be found on this event at weld4h.org. This is known as Contest Day and will be held at The Greeley Place in downtown Greeley.

If you are interested in becoming a 4-H volunteer, please contact Larry Hooker at the Extension office (970-304-6535). You can find more information about upcoming events and offerings from Weld County 4-H at: weld4h.org

Weld County 4-H Contest Day

June 22, 2013  at The  Greeley Place

Weld County 4-H Contest Day is comprised of three different contests. The three contests are: Creative Cooks, Cake Decorating and Performing Arts Contests. Any 4-H member can participate in all three contests.

4-H CREATIVE COOKS’ CONTEST

What is the Creative Cooks' Contest? Members plan a menu and table setting around a theme and prepare a food dish to display with the exhibit. They use their knowledge of nutrition, meal planning and food preparation in a creative way. Judges interview the participants to discuss their exhibits and knowledge of foods and nutrition.

The Creative Cooks' Contest is open to all 4-H members. Enrollment in a foods project is not a requirement. Any 4-H member ages 8 to 18 may enter. Cloverbuds will be able to participate in the Creative Cooks’ Contest.

CAKE DECORATING CONTEST
In this contest, participants decorate a unit-appropriate cake (or cake form; see new Unit requirements) within a given time period while being observed by the judges. See specific time allowances and requirements, which are included with these guidelines.

NEW THIS YEAR
